Lions, Wolves & Asiatic Wild Ass.

India is famous in wildlife circles as the place to see wild tigers, but is also home to some lesser known but even rarer and more endangered species like the Asiatic Lion, Asiatic Wild Ass, and Great Indian Bustard. India also boasts an impressive array of canids including the Striped Hyena, Indian Wolf, Jackal, Indian Fox, and Desert Fox. This bespoke Gujarat wildlife holiday will take you to an India which few explore and will reward you with rare wildlife, stunning landscapes and a tribal culture that shines brightly in the desert.

DAY 1: ARRIVE INTO AHMEDABAD AND OVERNIGHT AT A HERITAGE HOTEL.

You will be met on arrival at Ahmedabad international airport and transferred to the heart of the fascinating old tour where you will stay at a beautifully restored 150 year old mansion. You will hopefully have time in the afternoon to visit some of the city’s famous sights (we can arrange extra night and activities if required)

Accommodation : Divans heritage bungalow.

 

DAY 2: DRIVE FROM AHMEDABAD TO TO THE LITTLE RANN OF KUTCH.

After breakfast you will visit the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary-a Ramsar site that attracts a variety and of waterfowl, waders, cranes and other winter migrant species. Continue onwards to the ‘Rann Riders’ near Zainabad, where you will enjoy a safari in the Little Rann of Kutch

DAYS 3&4: TWO FULL DAYS TO EXPLORE KUTCH AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES.

Full day to explore Kutch and surrounding villages by jeep, with packed lunch and expert guide accompanying you. This is one of the most fascinating wildlife and cultural locations in western India and we will hope to see rare wildlife, such as Wild Ass (herds up to 30 individuals), Indian Gazelle, Indian Fox, Jackal and if we are very luck, Wolf. Rare birds found here include the houbara bustard, spotted and Indian sand grouse, and francolin partridge.

 

DAY 5: LONG DRIVE WEST TO NAKHATRANA.

After breakfast you will drive to Nakhatrana (a journey of approximately 6-7 hours with packed lunch), check in at the ‘Infinty Rann of Kutch’, west of Bhuj. In the evening you will visit the Banni Grasslands looking for the Lesser Bandicoot Rats; also a chance to see Jackal, Jungle Cat and Caracal

DAYS 6&7: TWO FULL DAYS EXPLORING.

Full day in the deserts and salt marshes of the Great Rann of Kutch. Chances for Great Indian bustard, Grey Hypocolius, Desert warbler and Stoliczkas Bushchat. You will also have a chance to see Desert Cat, Caracal, Hyena and Wolf.

 

DAY 8: GREAT RANN OF KUTCH TO JAMNAGAR.

After breakfast you will transferred to Jamnagar (a journey of approximately 6-7 hours), stopping as you wish for example to explore the city of Bhuj, and some of the smaller temple towns en route.

Accommodation : Hotel Fortune Palace.

 

DAY 9: VISIT NARARA MARINE NATIONAL PARK.

Early morning visit to the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, we will try to find are Crab Plover, Eurasian oyster catcher, Black necked stork , Black necked grebe, Great crested grebe, Indian skimmer. Encompassing seasonal freshwater bodies, saltpans, mudflats and mangroves, a breeding ground of many wetland birds and later to the Narara Marine National Park, India’s first marine sanctuary, consisting of an archipelago of 42 islands, coral reefs and mangrove forest.

 

DAY 10:JAMNAGAR TO SASAN GIR.

After breakfast you will be driven to ‘Gir Birding Lodge’ (a journey of approximately 5 hours, stopping as you wish), passing near Junagadh and Girnar Hill. Late afternoon jeep safari inside Sasan Gir National Park

DAYS 11&12: TWO FULL DAYS OF PRIVATE JEEP SAFARIS IN GIR.

Two days of early mornings and afternoon jeep safaris in this famous lion sanctuary. Despite the lion population increasing significantly in recent years they are not always easy to find, as they are well camouflaged and only exist in small prides compared to African lions. Sasan Gir has also been an excellent place to see leopards in the heat of the summer, but that dynamic may change with the increase in lions.

 

DAY 13: DRIVE FROM SASAN GIR TO VELVADAR.

Morning jeep safari inside Sasan Gir National Park. Later you will be driven to the ‘Blackbuck Lodge’ (a journey of approximately 4-5 hours), which will be your base for visits to the grasslands habitat of Velavadar national park.

Accommodation : Black Buck Lodge.

 

DAY 14: MORNING AND AFTERNOON PRIVATE SAFARIS.

Morning and afternoon jeep safari inside Velavadar National Park (two entries included), which was specifically designated for the preservation of Blackbuck Antelope, but which also offers outstanding opportunities to observe the rarely seen Hyena and Indian Wolf. Birding highlights include thousands of visiting Pallid, Marsh, and Montagu’s Harriers, and a lake frequented by flamingos, pelicans, herons, and other waders.

 

DAY 15: VELAVADAR TO AHMEDABAD.

After breakfast you will be driven back toward Ahmedabad (a journey of approximately 3-4 hours). Check into your beautiful heritage hotel with the afternoon free for further exploration of this vibrant and colourful city.

 

 

DAY 16: TRANSFER TO AHMEDABAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

Sadly, we have come to the end of your Indian wildlife holiday, although longer stays in India are our speciality and we would be delighted to suggest some wildlife, cultural or relaxation extension to this bespoke Gujarat wildlife safari.
